Undergraduate Medical Education

Inner City/Rural Preceptorship (ICRP)

Inner City/Rural Preceptorship, sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine, is open to all students at VCU’s School of Medicine. Students interested in participating in the program submit a one-page application to the ICRP program faculty before starting medical school. Students are accepted into the program based on a demonstrated interest to work with either rural or urban underserved populations in Virginia.

Students begin ICRP during the first year of medical school and continue until completion of the fourth year. Participating students are matched with an underserved community for their clinical experiences in the Foundations of Clinical Medicine course and for six months during the third and fourth years of medical school. The program offers a variety of department-sponsored enrichment activities, including monthly noon speakers and electives for the M-1 and M-2 years, and also coordinates off-campus activities with the Rural Interest Group. Additional enrichment activities include a campus and community adviser, pre-match interviews with the department’s residency programs, and the opportunity to complete a community project during the M-4 year.

Dr. Michelle Whitehurst-Cook and Dr. Carolyn Peel are the physician faculty advisers for the ICRP. For information about the program visit our Web site or contact Gay Olsen, M.S. at (804) 828-9780.
