M-4 Electives

Course 3800: Physician Associates in Family Medicine
(maximum enrollment — three students per month)

The Physician Associates in Family Medicine elective requires students to spend four weeks with community-based family physicians from around the state. An effort is made to match students to their hometowns or to areas where they can provide their own housing. Occasionally, we may have sites where lodging is provided. The focus of this elective is to provide a community-based family medicine experience to students away from Richmond and the tertiary care center. Preceptors are available in cities, towns and small rural communities throughout Virginia. Special requests for specific communities in Virginia will be considered if a family physician preceptor is available in the requested area. Sites are not generally available in the Richmond area.

Students spend most of their time in the private family medicine office providing health care to individuals and their families. Some time may be spent in the local community hospital, conducting home health visits or visiting nursing homes, as well as participating in other medically related activities such as medical staff meetings, business meetings or medical education programs. The purpose of this elective is to provide interested fourth-year students an opportunity to experience the clinical and cultural aspects of family medicine generally not available at a large medical center.

Contact Dr. Gay Olsen at gsolsen@vcu.edu or (804) 828-9780 at least six-to-eight weeks prior to your scheduled elective to allow time for arrangements.

Course 3801: VCU Department of Family Medicine Residency
(maximum enrollment – three students per month)

The VCU Department of Family Medicine Residency electives are available to students during the fall of their fourth year. Students will spend their time providing health care to individuals and their families in the office and local community hospital, going on home health visits or to nursing homes. In addition, students will participate in other medically related activities such as medical staff meetings, business meetings or medical education programs. Medical students interested in signing up for an elective at one of the six VCU Family Medicine Residency Programs (Blackstone, Chesterfield, Fairfax, Hanover, Riverside and Shenandoah Valley) should sign up early in the spring of their third year.

Contact Dr. Gay Olsen for more specific information about signing up for residency electives at (804) 828-9780.

Course 3803: Rural/Small Town Family Medicine
(maximum enrollment – three students per month)

The Rural/Small Town Family Medicine elective is designed specifically for fourth-year students interested in rural/small town family medicine. Family physicians in rural and small town settings throughout Virginia will serve as preceptors. This elective provides an opportunity to experience family medicine and the rewards of practicing and living in a rural/small town community. Medical students will experience the variety and depth of family medicine in these settings, including extended care facilities, small hospitals, house calls and civic meetings. Students will come to understand the particularly significant role of the family physician in the social fabric of rural communities. Rural family medicine opportunities are available throughout the state. The  VCU Shenandoah Family Medicine Residency Program is available to assist students with these learning experiences. Although there are a limited number of sites where housing is provided, students must generally select sites where they can provide their own housing with family or friends.

Contact Dr. Gay Olsen at (804) 828-9780 at least six-to-eight weeks prior to the scheduled elective to allow time for arrangements. Students interested in rotations at the Shenandoah Valley residency programs should sign up early in the spring of their third year.
