Message from the Chair

Welcome!

At Virginia Commonwealth University we are passionate about family medicine. Our family medicine residents receive superb training at diverse and dynamic programs throughout Virginia. We emphasize teamwork as well as the development of the individual. When you have completed your residency training with us, you will be wonderfully prepared.

The VCU Family Medicine Graduate Program is a system of six community-based residency programs located in urban, suburban and rural settings. Our residencies are connected to outstanding health care systems for clinical support and the family medicine centers are thriving, up-to-date community practices. This year, we are proud to say that we have achieved a milestone reached by very few other departments: 1,000 family physicians have graduated from our residencies. Find out more information about the programs by clicking on “Residency Programs” on our home page.

While we are very proud of our residency programs, we have a lot more to offer. Explore our Web site to learn about our undergraduate programs, which include an innovative and highly successful inner city/rural track, and new self-instructional and distance education additions to our M-3 clerkship. Our research team is headed by one of only a few family physicians in the Institute of Medicine, and their recent and current studies include medical errors in primary care, longitudinal practice-based research, and cancer screening and prevention. New areas of emphasis will include helping patients adopt healthier lifestyles, and identifying the causes and solutions to disparities in health care. Our faculty has diverse and exciting interests, and we invite you to learn about them on our central and residency Web sites. We look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

Best wishes,
Anton J. Kuzel, M.D.
